Course Description
Physics 106 is a calculus-based introduction to simple harmonic oscillations and waves, elementary optics, electromagnetism and DC circuits.

  • WebCT for grades. Access WebCT via the mylasalle portal or the direct link on the course wiki.
  • When e-mailing, use PHY106 at the beggining of each subject line.

You must have a TI-84 graphing calculator or equivalent. Calculator functions must include graphing, tracing, zooming, and parametric equations. The calculator must be carried to class and to all exams.


  • Five Weekly Exams, each 10% of final grade
  • Final Exam worth 20% of final grade. Counted 30% and lowest weekly exam dropped if beneficial
  • Class Participation 5% (A mixture of attendance, asking, and answering questions.)
  • Lab, worth 25% of the final grade (See Lab Guidelines for the specifics of this grade.)

Note: Students must receive a passing grade (> 60%) in BOTH lecture and lab components in order to pass the entire course. If this requirement is met, the final grade is determined by:

Grade lowered one step for every two unexplained lecture absences or one lab absence

Exam Notes

  • Weekly exams will usually be given during the first 30 minutes of Thursday’s lab period.
  • Exams will be based on lectures as well as assigned readings/problems. Not all assigned material will be covered in class and questions based on this material may appear on exams
  • Calculator borrowing during an exam is not permitted
  • Plagiarizing/cheating during exams will result in an “F” grade in the course for all parties
  • Missed exams: 1 missed exam counts as a “dropped” exam, and the final automatically counts for 30%. Only 1 test may be dropped because of not taking an exam; 0 credit for > 1 missed. A valid reason for missing an exam must be presented as soon as possible.
